Celebrating El Paso's Old West Heritage

News Article

Saturday July 23rd saw the 7th annual National Day of the Cowboy, and the El Paso Museum of History hosted its 2nd annual celebration in conjunction with.

On hand were the Six Guns and Shady Ladies, and Paso del Norte Pistoleros to perform gunfights for the crowds.  The Castro Family Charros gave a wonderful demonstration of the equestrian skills that form the backbone of the American cowboy.

Yours truly was on hand to talk about the chuck box, and have the kids grind some coffee grounds.  Docent Rod Linkous hand his antique gun collection on display, explaining the various firearms a cowboy would have used.

The folks from Old West Thunder held a Victorian fashion show inside the museum.  Other volunteers helped the kids try on old west clothing, color a cowboy, and make rope.  Unfortunately, because of the fire ban, the kids weren’t able to brand a piece of wood.

The weather, while hot, was still pleasant enough allow over 1000 people participate in the events.

Plans are underway already for next year’s Day of the Cowboy.
